Mountains have special charm - Rila, Pirin, the Rhodope Mountain. But for us Strandzha Mountain is the unmatched one. It tells legends of proud rebels, fierce battles and of hopes and suffering. It is a place of refuge, a cozy home, a new life. It gives opportunities to those who understand her tongue and love it.

 

In a recess of Strandzha Mountain, a place among Byala Voda village, Zabernovo village, Orana polyana area and a Veleka river lies the Velkov apiary. It, like the mountain, has a long history. Stoyan Velkov, the patriarch of the Velkov family (one of the most respected and famous families in Strandzha Mountain) chose the place for the apiary both because of its location, which favors pure and healing honeydew honey production - exotic and preferred product and because the place is full of herbs and various honey vegetation. Amazingly resourceful and pragmatic, grandpa Stoyan foresees the future, when the region became part of the Natura 2000 and was declared ecologically clean. (Strandzha Mountain is one of the few green spots on the environmental map of Europe).

 

 

Stoyan Velkov’s heir Veliko Velkov (my father in law) continues the tradition with enthusiasm and perseverance. Veliko Velkov is an incredible man of many talents, most famous as one of the best folk singers of Strandzha. His is the man who continued, extended and multiplied what grandpa Stoyan achieved. Honey of our family apiary became very popular and it is a preferred product on many tables.

I, as a representative of this large and respected family, took as my family duty and responsibility to keep, strengthen and promote the achievements, so that the healing power of Grandpa Velko’s honey to bring joy and give hope to a lot more people.
